Tips for How to Keep Clothes from Falling Off RV Hangers

When you are getting set up in a new camp spot in your RV trip plan, the last thing you want to spend 20 minutes doing is hanging clothes up that keep falling off the hangers. Our biggest tip for overcoming this problem is to purchase velvet hangers.

How Do You Stop Hangers from Sliding in an RV?

Another problem you commonly run into after opening your RV closet doors is all of your clothes are off to one side of the closet. To us, this isn’t as big of a deal compared to clothes falling off the hanger but can still be a nuisance, especially if your closets aren’t packed to the gills like ours.

If you have a relatively full closet like ours usually is, you won’t have to worry about this problem. However, if you have a very large closet with only a couple of items hanging in it, your clothes will slide as you drive. 

Split Loom Tubing

A great way to stop hangers from sliding in an RV is a quick and easy fix. You just need to get some split loom tubing to put over the rod in your RV closet. The wire cover has ridges on the outside of the tubing which makes it so your clothes won’t slide up and down the rod while you drive.

Another perk of the split loom tubing is that the ridges help separate the hangers a bit. This prevents your clothes from being packed in your closet so tightly, so they aren’t as wrinkly.

Another option for preventing this problem is to use a gorilla grip drawer liner. You can wrap the liner around the roll but will most likely need to use some sort of adhesive to keep it attached to the rod. This has a little more prep work compared to the split loom tubing but is another effective option.

I also think the shelf liner isn’t quite as durable as the split liner because of the soft material it is made from. You will need to use a little more caution when putting hangers back on the wrapped bar.

How Do You Keep a Hanger From Falling in an RV?

A problem that we use to consistently run into was having our hangers completely fall off the rod in our RV closet. I would open our closet to find 100 hangers at the bottom with all of the clothes off hangers. It was so frustrating!  

We have found a couple of different tips to help prevent hangers from falling in an RV.

First, invest in the Utopia Home Premium Velvet Hangers. You can use some pliers to bend the top loop to be smaller, which makes it harder for the hanger to fall off the rod. This is a quick and easy fix that can make a big difference.

Second, you can add the split loom tubing to the rod. This prevents your clothes from sliding across the rod but also increases the width of the rod. This makes it harder for the hanger to bounce off.   

If both of these ideas aren’t working or you don’t want to add the split loom tubing, you can use two RV hangers instead of one. This is kind of a pain when putting your clothes on but will solve your problem. By facing the two top hooks in opposite directions, you will essentially create a circle around the rod, so your hangers won’t bounce off.

Lastly, if the ceiling of your RV closet is angled, you can put the open side of the hook is facing towards you instead of away from you. Because the hanger will most likely be resting up against the ceiling behind the rod, having the opened loop forward may be enough to keep the hanger from bouncing off the rod.

Our RV closet fits a standard hanger, so we don’t have to work around this, but our old camper had really narrow and skinny cupboards, which made hanging things difficult. I have also seen RV closets with a slanted ceiling which makes it so a standard hanger doesn’t fit.

If your RV closet doesn’t fit standard camping hangers you have a couple of different options. You can try using children’s hangers. Children’s hangers can still hold adult-size clothing and will fit in your smaller space.

Second, you can use hangers with a swivel like the velvet hangers I recommended above. You can twist the hanger to fit in the closet at an angle.

It is a good idea to measure the depth of your closet before purchasing hangers to make sure they will fit.
