Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park Campground is a highly sought-after landscape when it comes to camping in this area. The demand for a spot in this large campground far surpasses the available supply. 

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park reservations for camping are available six months in advance. So, if you’ve got your heart set on certain dates, be sure to plan ahead when trying to snag one of the best campsites in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. 

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park camping is so popular because many of the sites are right along the banks of the river. The river site is an amazing spot to spend a couple of days in nature.

Ewoldsen Nature Center 

It can be a welcome change to break up the time in nature with a little interactive play and learning. Ewoldsen Nature Center’s main attraction is its life-size depiction of Big Sur, accessible to children and visitors of all ages. 

The layout highlights Pfeiffer State Park Big Sur’s natural habitat areas and teaches guests about the flowers and other vegetation in Pfeiffer State Park and the greater Big Sur area. The “Fly like a Condor” interactive exhibit, which simulates actual condor flight patterns, is always a hit with families.

Pfeiffer Falls 

Pfeiffer Falls is one of the main highlights of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. It’s a stunning hike that leads visitors into the heart of the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park Redwoods forest. It starts out a bit challenging for certain skill levels, but overall it’s one of the best easy hikes in Big Sur.  

After the initial climb and entry into the coast redwoods, you will reach a fork in the trail. Take the pathway to the right for a remarkable view of the 60-foot waterfall, Pfeiffer Falls. This is an amazing spot to set up a picnic, so you can enjoy lunch with the waterfall as your backdrop. 

Overall, it’s a great trail for everyone. It’s one of the most enjoyable Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park trails for people of all ages and abilities. This trail is currently closed at the time of writing. Check parks.ca.gov for trail status, road closures, and Big Sur camping options at the time of your visit. 

Valley View Trail 

Valley View Trail is another self-guided nature trail that branches off the same trail the Pfeiffer Falls trail originated on. Once you reach the trail fork, take a left instead of going right to Pfeiffer Falls. After a short walk down the path, you will run into Valley View Overlook. 

This vantage point offers visitors amazing views of the Big Sur River Valley. The rolling, lush green hills are a sight well worth the hike. Through the open meadows, your kids can also catch a glimpse of Point Sur and Andrew Molera State Park from this overlook. 

Where to See the Redwoods 

California is known for some of the world’s most impressive Redwood trees. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is no exception, as this is a great place to experience the majesty of these enormous, age-old trees. 

The best place to see Redwoods in this state park is at the Redwood Deck. If you follow the River Path, you will be led right to the trees. There are so many massive trees here that the sun can hardly shine through. We enjoyed seeing the redwoods here.

Pfeiffer Beach 

Pfeiffer Beach is one of our favorite places to visit when spending a few days at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park Campground. The purple sand is what really sets this beach apart from any others we’ve visited. The sand is made from manganese garnet particles and Keyhole Rock, which is why it has such a colorful hue. 

This beach is usually pretty quiet, so your family will be sure to have your own space as you explore the beach area. Remember that the waves can be rough here, but there are small wading pools your kids will love. 

We had a great time seeing the purple sand on this beach; my kids loved wading through the small pools. We didn’t swim in the ocean here because of the large waves, but there were a few people swimming near the shore.

If the timing is right, this is an amazing spot to wrap up your day with a gorgeous California sunset. There are so many ways to enjoy Big Sur, but an afternoon or evening at Pfeiffer Beach is one of our favorites.

Dog-Friendly Things to Do in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park 

Dogs are permitted in a couple of specific areas in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. ½ mile north of Big Sur Station is a dog-friendly portion of the park. Leashed dogs are allowed to wander the paved, day-use lots. They are not allowed on the trails. 

Warden’s Path and River Loop is another portion of the park that welcomes dogs. A little over ½ mile loop traces the path of the Big Sur River. As the trail progresses, visitors will be led through the beautiful Redwood Deck area.

There are places to stop along the way to take in the scenery or even enjoy lunch at one of the picnic areas.

Big Sur Lodge – Mid-Range 

Big Sur Lodge is the only accommodation located inside the park. Fully equipped, the lodge has 61 guest rooms, a conference center, a cafe, and a grocery store. The property also features a seasonal outdoor pool and laundry facilities. 

The rooms are simple but quaint and cozy. Whether you’re in a staying room or one of the cottages, it’s a great environment to settle in after a long day at the park. Many of the cottages feature fireplaces and balconies. 

Cooked-to-order breakfast is offered each morning. It’s not complimentary, but the rate is fair. Plus, it’s a convenient way to get the family fed without having to leave the park since you’re already there and ready to start the day.

Dining at Big Sur Lodge restaurant is another on-site option when mealtimes roll around.

Hidden Valley Inn – Budget

It’s a challenge to find hotels near Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park when traveling on a budget. Hidden Valley Inn is not the closest hotel to the park but it’s a great place to stay and offers a fair price. It is an hour away from the park.

The staying rooms here are spacious and spotless, comfortable and quiet. Featuring mainly king-sized beds, most rooms include a sleeping area and a separate living area. Most rooms also include a balcony overlooking the beautiful garden or outdoor pool area. 

Overall, this quiet and secluded property has an old-time charm and peacefulness about it. If you have to drive an hour outside the park for hotel accommodations, at least you know this spot is worth the trouble!

His love for the land is why the park bears his name. Bringing history full circle into today, you can actually visit a reconstructed version of John Pfeiffer’s cabin along the Gorge Trail.
