We’ve enjoyed all the activities on this list from hiking, riding 4×4 trails, and touring the national parks. We love the beautiful landscapes we get to enjoy on the hiking trails and the fun outdoor atmosphere.
We have made a list of our favorite things to do in Moab. There is a huge range of great activities and tours that we find exciting and enjoyable. If you are an adventure seeker, hiker, or someone looking for great views, Moab has just what you are looking for.
Things to Do in Moab, Utah
1. Rent a Jeep from Moab Adventure Center
Renting a Jeep is one of the best things to do in Moab. It means you do not need to have your own Jeep or off-road vehicle to try out some really fun trails. Renting a Jeep from the Moab Adventure Center is super easy because of its location in downtown Moab in Utah.
When you rent a Jeep from the Moab Adventure Center, you will have a high-quality vehicle that is supported by quality staff. They will help instruct you on where you should go, and they will also help plan a favorable route or two depending on how long you will have your rental.
Some great places to take your Jeep after you rent it are the White Rim Road, Shafer Trail, and Gemini Bridges Trail, but there are many more options.
We loved our Jeep rental from Moab’s Adventure Center. We spent the day exploring the White Rim Road and Shafer Trail in Canyonlands National Park.
2. Explore Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands National Park is a fun, family-friendly experience, and the park can be explored in many different ways. You can explore the off-road trails by driving a jeep or other off-road vehicle through the park’s off-road trails.
Tip: Use this self-guided audio tour to make the most out of your time in Canyonlands National Park. It is filled with must-see spots and fascinating history!
You can explore the Island In The Sky District of the park easily by any vehicle. The Island in The Sky District of Canyonlands is the most visited section of the park and the easiest to get to. We spent a day hiking and visiting the viewpoints and had an awesome day. The views are amazing.
We often do a combination of hiking, visiting the viewpoints, and exploring the off-road trails when we visit Canyonland National Park. There are also some great tours you can take through the park.
Tours in Canyonlands are a lot of fun, especially if you don’t have a 4×4 vehicle and want to explore down the White Rim Road.
▶ BOOK a Canyonlands Half-Day Tour from Moab
If you’re going to be visiting Canyonlands and any of the other national parks in Southern Utah, like Arches, we highly recommend purchasing the America the Beautiful Pass. It will get you into all of the national parks as well as thousands of other sites around the country. We have had this card for four years now and definitely get our money’s worth out of it.
3. Explore Arches National Park
Arches National Park is probably one of the most popular places to visit in Moab, Utah. There are lots of hiking trails and beautiful arches to explore in Arches National Park. It is also home to the Iconic Delicate Arch that is on the Utah license plates.
The most common way to explore this national park is by driving through the entrance. However, in the busy season, this can be difficult and can be very time-consuming because of the long lines at the entrance.
The best way to skip these large lines is by taking an Arches National Park 4×4 Adventure from Moab. You get to skip a lot of the crowds by taking a 4×4 adventure through Moab, and far fewer people take the time to see this great park by taking its off-road trails.
We highly recommended checking out this park by exploring its off-road trails, and this tour is a great way to do it if you do not want to rent a Jeep. They will even pick you up from your hotel if you are staying close to town.
Outside of exploring the 4×4 trails, we loved hiking to Delicate Arch and letting our kids play at Sand Dune Arch. If you’re interested in more of a hiking guided tour, you can view the Arches National Park guided tours here.
Remember to bring your America the Beautiful Pass to get in for free! Timed entry reservations are required for Arches National Park from April 3 – October 3. Reservations are released three months in advance in monthly blocks. You can read more about the reservations here.
4. Drive Fins and Things 4×4 Trail
Fins and Things 4×4 Trail is one of the top things to do in Moab if you have not spent a lot of time off-roading but want to try a fun off-road trail that is not too hard but not too easy. There are great slickrock climbs and a few bypasses if something makes you feel uncomfortable.
For those who want to take a side-by-side vehicle out on the trail but don’t have any of your own, you should check out this tour that will take you to two very iconic trails in Fins and Things and Hells Revenge.
▶ BOOK Fins and Things Off-Road Tour
Taking a RZR or OHV through the trails is a completely different experience than going on the trails in a Jeep.
A SXS can typically go much faster on the trails than when you are in a Jeep. This is because the suspension is different, making the trail less bumpy. We have taken a Jeep and RZR through the trails, and they are both fun, but there is something awesome about the wind blowing around you and the freedom you feel when in a side-by-side.
You can read more about our experience on Fins and Things and what to expect in our Fins and Things Trail Guide.
5. Drive Hell’s Revenge 4×4 Trail
Hell’s Revenge in Moab, Utah, is the most iconic off-road trail in the United States. People and businesses from all over the world come to test their vehicles along this trail. The reason this is such a great trail is because of the variety of difficulties the trail provides.
Those looking for something difficult but not overbearing can take this trail and bypass many of the hardest obstacles.
For those looking for entertainment, they can stop and watch as people take on obstacles like Mickey’s Hot Tub, The Escalator, and the famous Hells Gate. To read more about Hell’s Revenge, check out our Hell’s Revenge Trail Guide.
6. Go on a Guided Tour of Hell’s Revenge
If you are going to only take one tour, you should definitely take a tour through Hell’s Revenge. The Moab Extreme 3-Hour Experience is a fun-filled adventure that takes you down all of the challenging parts along the Hell’s Revenge Trail.
This means you will go through Hells Gate, The Escalator, Micky’s Hot Tub, and more. Many of the other tours bypass some or all of these difficult obstacles.
This is a great experience the whole family can enjoy. They have experienced and professional drivers for a fun and exciting adventure, making it one of the best things to do in Moab.

7. Raft the Colorado River
For those who are looking to cool down in the Hot Moab summers, a whitewater rafting adventure is exactly what you are looking for. The Whitewater Rafting in Moab will take you down the Colorado River through some fun rapids, making it a great adventure for first-time rafters and those who occasionally enjoy getting wet with class 2 rapids.
This tour will provide you with everything you need, including transportation, lifejackets, helmets, and a riverside lunch. When the Moab area gets crowded, a whitewater rafting adventure is a great way to avoid the national park lines and stay cool.
▶ BOOK A Rafting Trip Down the Colorado River
8. Go on a Canyoneering Tour
A canyoneering tour is a fun activity for those looking to see Moab’s arches through a different lens. The Moab Repelling Adventure: Medieval Chamber Slot Canyon Tour will repel down the Medieval Chamber and the Morning Glory Arch. You will see the arch from the top down.
The cost is very economical and something the family can do together.
If you do take this tour, make sure you are not taking kids that are under 12 years old. We loved this tour, but there were some unexpected younger children on the tour that took a long time because of the heights. The height of the repel can be intimidating, but it is a very safe and enjoyable experience.

9. Visit the Dead Horse Point Overlook
The Dead Horse Point State Park and overlook is a great place to see one of the Colorado River’s Gooseneck bends. The view from the overlook is stunning and worth the visit. Many people bypass this, but it is worth the view.
It is not something you need to spend all day checking out, but the views are stunning.
You can see into the Canyonlands National Park, and you will overlook the Shafer Trail and White Rim Trail that goes through Canyonlands. A “gooseneck” is when the river does a shape 180-degree turn creating a long and skinny loop shape.
We love checking out the river views and how the rivers shape the canyons around the area.
10. Go on a Horseback Ride
Horseback riding through Moad is a fun way to learn about the wild west and its history. At the same time, you will get to experience the landscape just as many pioneers did before us. You will be able to explore the area and see some exciting views on horseback.
You can book a tour through the Moab Adventure Center.
11. Visit Moab Giants
If you like dinosaurs, you should check out the Moab Giants Dinosaur Park. This is the best place to see dinosaurs and their life-size proportions. The Moab Giants has a large trail that will take you by many dinosaurs built to their actual size.
We loved seeing the different sizes and different kinds of dinosaurs. This was one of our kids’ favorite things we did in Moab, and they are still talking about it.
Many years ago, the Moab area was filled with animals, and it is a lot of fun learning about these humongous animals and the fossils and footprints they left behind for users to explore and learn about. We love the Moab Giants, and so did our kiddos.
12. Drive the White Rim Trail
The White Rim Trail is a popular trail that, if driven all the way through, will generally take a couple of days. The trail goes through Canyonlands National Park and is a popular trail. However, you will need to get a permit to drive this trail.
You can traverse the trail on a bike or with a four-wheel drive vehicle. To learn more about the White Rim Trail, you can check out our White Rim Trail Guide.
For those who don’t want to mess with getting the needed permit, there is a tour that will make it simple and enjoyable. The Canyonlands National Park White Rim Trail by 4WD tour is a full-day tour with an included lunch. This tour will take you to many of the popular White Rim Trail destinations before heading back to Moab.
13. Rent a Mountain Bike to Bike the Slickrock Trails
There are so many fun things to do in Moab you would have to return on many different occasions to experience all the fun and different adventures it offers. Mountain biking on the slickrock mountain bike trails is another fun way to get in some exercise and enjoy the outdoors.
For those who are not already experts and didn’t bring their own mountain bike, you can rent a bike and all the needed equipment.
These bike rentals are set up, so you don’t need to haul the bike anywhere. You can show up and get everything you need right at the trailhead just north of Moab.
The trail system where you will pick up your bikes is a popular beginner and intermediate area where you can see Arches and the La Sal Mountain Range.
If you haven’t done much mountain biking before or would feel more comfortable having a guide with you, you can go on a mountain biking tour along the Moab Courthouse Loop. This is a great introductory loop that is 7 to 10 miles long.
It is great for beginners and new riders with little experience and families.
14. Explore the Sand Flats Recreation Area
The Sand Flats Recreation Area is where a lot of action is, and it is only a few minutes from downtown Moab. It is home to many of the most popular off-road trails in the area, like Hells Revenge, Fins and Things, and the Porcupine off-road trail.
The Sand Flats area is also a popular location for mountain biking and camping. There are lots of campgrounds in the area but be aware that the majority of the campgrounds are not big-rig friendly and cell coverage in the area is limited.
15. Visit the Natural Bridges National Monument
The Natural Bridges National Monument is a little bit outside of Moab. It is a 2-hour drive, but it is a stunning place to visit and makes for a great day trip. The Natural Bridges area was created by water, while the arches in Moab were created by wind and sand.
It is amazing two see two completely different places only a few hours apart but with both having beautiful arches.
The Natural Bridges Monument was such a fun place to see. We arrived on a day when it was snowing and were a little bummed at first that it would not be as good.
As we ventured through the monument, we realized it was actually still a great time to visit. The colors were beautiful and super bright with the snow and rain.
Natural Bridges is a fantastic location to hike and view some beautiful scenery. If you get the chance, you should take the time to see it.
16. Paddleboarding
Paddleboarding is one of the great things to do in Moab when it is hot. Moab is not known as much for its water activities as it is for its National Parks, biking, and off-roading, but it still has some fun water adventures.
Paddleboarding is a great relaxing activity that is fun for many different types of people and ages.
Most people don’t bring their paddleboards to Moab or would know where to use them if they did, and that is where Flatwater Fun comes in. They offer a fun 3 to 4-hour tour where you can avoid the crowds and the hot weather while playing in the Colorado River.
They offer snacks, water, professional licensed guides, and transportation to and from the river. These activities are also a great way to meet new people who are adventuring and visiting the area.
While on this tour or any other great tours the area offers, be sure to ask your guide any questions about the area. They are often very knowledgeable and love spending time in the outdoors, probably more than most of us.
17. Try Your Hand at Rock Climbing
If you have not had the opportunity to try rock climbing, you should take the opportunity to experience it. It is one of the great outdoor activities in the area, and a great way to get started is by going with professional guides in Moab.
The area has many great locations for rock climbers that want to be close to town. Many areas require long hikes or drives to get to where you can climb, but in Moab, a good climbing spot is only a few miles away.
The Full Day Rock Climbing Tour gives you everything you will need to have a safe and fun experience climbing up Moab’s famous slick rock. With all the gear and supplies covered all, you need to show up ready for a fun adventure climbing the beautiful Moab red rocks.
Free Things to Do in Moab
When visiting Moab, you may feel that many of the exciting activities are not overly cheap, or you need to have a good amount of your own gear. However, there are some great fun, free activities you can explore while in Moab.
Below you will find our list of the best free things to do in Moab.
18. Hike to Corona Arch
Corona Arch is one of the prettiest and most fun arches that is not inside the nearby national parks, which is perfect if you’re looking to hike with your dog. The hike is moderate but not too hard, making it a fun hike for a wide variety of skill levels and ages.
The arch is huge and a great place to visit and spend some time outdoors. The Corona Arch can also be one of the fun things to do in Moab at night. It is a fun place to see at night, and the trail is good enough that it won’t be too hard to find your way back in the dark.
Our kids love this hike and enjoyed playing under the arch. For more info on Corona Arch, you can get a complete breakdown of the hike and what to expect in our Corona Arch Trail Guide.
One thing to keep in mind is that this is a popular hike, so during the busy season, there is a good chance the trail and the arch will have a number of people around it.
19. Hike to Jeep Arch
Jeep Arch is a fun hike that is far less well known as the Corona Arch. The Jeep Arch trailhead is only half a mile past the Corona Arch parking area but is visited by far fewer people. If you are looking for a fun, secluded, and more shaded trail that is not inside a National Park, you will want to visit Jeep Arch.
We loved Jeep Arch, but there are a few things you should know before you go. Make sure you check out our Jeep Arch Trail Guide to learn about the trail, and the distance and to view some great pictures of the area.
You will love the Jeep Arch, especially if you like to avoid areas that have loads of other people.
20. Drive the Shafer Road
The Shafer Road is a great off-road trail that is not overly hard, but it takes you by some great views and the iconic Shafer Switchbacks. We loved traveling on the switchbacks. The Shafer Trail is also the back way to get into Canyonlands National Park.
If you are in the area and it is busy, and you have a vehicle that is four-wheel drive, you might want to try getting into the Canyonland National Park by driving the Shafer Trial. You can bypass the entrance station, which can easily take an hour or more to get to.
To learn more about the Shafter Trail, check out our Shafter Road Trail Guide.
21. Drive the Poison Spider Mesa 4×4 Trail
This activity is free, but it requires you have a substantial 4×4 vehicle or an OHV like Polaris RZR, Can-AM, or similar. The trail is one of our favorites and was a trail we took the whole family on. The trail is not easy, so we would recommend having gone down at least Fins and Things first before trying this trail.
If you want to rent a Jeep and a RZR to take on the trail, make sure you check with the rental company that you are allowed to take the vehicle on this trail. This can be a trail that is prohibited from taking the rentals on. The side-by-side rentals might be different. We are not sure because we just brought our own.
To learn more about the Poison Spider Mesa Trail, check out our Poison Spider Mesa Trail Guide.
22. Hike to Fisher Towers
Fisher Towers is another great hike that is outside of the national parks. Your hike will wind you through some pretty rock towers. The hike is not overly difficult but is considered a moderate hike since it is a little bit longer, with a round trip being just over 4 miles long and an elevation gain of around 650 feet.
The hike is about a 40-minute drive from Moab on scenic Hwy 128. You will also pass Sandy Beach, which is a fun spot to stop and swim with a sandy beach. However, the beach is not as sandy as it used to be. The last flood washed away a lot of the sand.
The GPS coordinates to the Fisher Towers Hike are 38.7252, -109.309. If you are looking for a secluded hike where you are not going to run into too many people, this is a hike that is worth a visit. You can also bring your furry friends, but they should be leashed.
23. Go Camping on the BLM Land for Free
There are lots of camping on BLM land that is surrounding Moab. The camping areas are really large, making them great for getting away from the crowds, but they do vary in distance from Moab, so depending on your activities and how far you want to drive where you camp on the BLM could vary.
Recently there have been a few changes to some of the BLM camping with the new introduction of the Utah Raptor State Park, which used to be a close free camping area near Moab with a lot of camping spots, but it now costs 15 dollars a night.
However, don’t let that deter you from staying there. We spent about five nights there on our last trip to Moab and had a great time.
24. Swim at Ken’s Lake
Ken’s Lake is a great spot to swim and cool off. It is located just outside of Moab and is an easy drive to get to. The lake has a large swimming area as well as an area for fishing. The views of the La Sal Mountains are beautiful and make it a great place to spend the day.
There are camping options around the lake, making it a great spot for those who want to be close to a nice peaceful lake and not be in the middle of town.
The lake is less than 20 minutes from Moab and is not far for the La Sal Mountains. It sits between the mountains and the Moab Red rocks. The lake is a great spot to paddleboard, kayak, or enjoy other similar water activities.
If you want to reserve a campsite at Ken’s Lake, check out the recreation.gov website.
25. Play on the Moab Sand Hill
The Moab Sand Hill is a fun sand hill the family will enjoy climbing or sledding down. The hill is right off of the US-191 as you head into Moab if you are coming from the North. The parking area is not huge, but it is large enough for a number of vehicles.
If you don’t have sandboards or sleds, then your kids will have fun climbing the hill and running or rolling down but be careful because the hill is steep. The super fine Moab sand is very soft, so it does make climbing the hill difficult.
We love these types of activities because it is a great way to tire the kids out and let them get some exercise.
If you want to check out buying some sandboards, you can check them out here, and don’t forget the board wax. It really helps on the sand.
26. Drive the Scenic Byway 128
Scenic Byway 128 is a pretty drive that follows the mighty Colorado River and is also where some of the more luxurious places to stay in Moab are located, like the Sorrel River Ranch Resort and Spa and the Red Cliffs Lodge.
Along Hwy 128, you can also make a few stops at Sandy Beach or Fisher towers. The river along Hwy 128 makes it a nice relaxing drive.
27. Visit Faux Falls
Faux Falls is a fun, family-friendly waterfall that is only 20 minutes from Moab, UT. The name comes from the fact that the waterfall is man-made. It is sometimes thought of as being a fake waterfall which is incorrect. It is a great waterfall, but it was just not naturally created in the wild.
The water comes from Mill Creek through a diversion tunnel, and then after flowing down through Faux Falls, the water travels down to what is known as Ken’s Lake, which is another fun area to explore.
28. Walk the Streets in Downtown Moab
Downtown Moab has many fun shops to look at and explore. You can explore some of the different rental shops that have a great variety of items you may need for your stay, like hiking backpacks and water bottles, or stop by to ask them about a tour.
The downtown area also has some fun stores where you can purchase or just browse for fun shirts and hats that all pertain to the surrounding area. If you like food, you can also check out some of the different restaurants and the great food they offer.
Keep scrolling down on this article to see some of our favorite places to eat near Moab’s Downtown.
29. See the Petroglyphs in Moab
Moab is loaded with petroglyphs from an ancient society that used to live in the area. The petroglyphs are amazing to view and see the different symbols.
Our kids also love them because many of the symbols have animals and different types of people depicted in them. Our kids love to see the writings and copy them into their school notebooks. This can all be done for free, or if you want a little help finding the petroglyphs, you can check out this 2-Hour Ebike Petroglyph Tour.
Not only are the petroglyphs fun, but we love riding Ebikes. They are also a great way to exercise and give you the option to exercise more or less. If you have not tried Ebikes, we recommend giving them a try. They are fantastic.
▶ BOOK a Ebike Petroglyph Tour
30. Try Your Hand at Bouldering at Lions Park or Big Bend Bouldering Area
The Lions Park, just North of Moab, is a fun little park with a unique bouldering area. This area is fun for kids and adults. Our kid loved trying to climb on the bouldering area, and Coltin even tried his hand at some of the obstacles.
There are multiple different options to climb, some being harder than others.
31. Visit Hole ‘N the Rock
Hole ‘N the Rock is a fun roadside attraction just to the South of Moab. There is a store, and an exotic zoo with animals like camels, Watusi Cows, and an Albino Racoon. If you stop at Hole ‘N the Rock, you can also take a 12-minute guided tour of the famous Hole ‘N the Rock House.
If you are driving by or have a bit of free time, this is a fun, quick stop that is one of the great unique things to do in Moab.
You can see more about the Hole ‘N the Rock on their website here.
32. Visit Wilson Arch
Wilson Arch is a nice arch that is 30 minutes south of Moab, which is a short hike that is only about half a mile and 100 feet of elevation gain. The trail is not overly easy, as you will need to scramble up some rocks as you go.
If you just want a typical walking trail, this is not going to be the hike for you, but if you are looking for an area where you get to climb over some rocks, and it is not a long hike, this is a good arch to check out on your way into or out of town.
33. Moab Backyard Theater
The Moab Backyard Theater is a fun activity in Downtown Moab. The families who run it are local to Moab and have created a nice venue where they have music and magic shows. If you go to one of the free concerts, you can relax and listen to music and, if you want, purchase some food at the food truck on the property.
We went to the magic show, and it was great for our kids. They absolutely loved it! We have gone to other magic shows, but they can be so complicated that the kids don’t really understand the trick. Note: tickets for the Magic Show cost $10 per adult and $5 per child.
This magic show is great even for adults, but the kids get to participate, and each trick does not take 30 minutes to accomplish because of the complexity making it a fun show that you can sit back and relax while viewing. The environment is a small town local feel the whole family will enjoy visiting.
34. Hike to Morning Glory Arch
The Morning Glory Arch is a fantastic arch that is just a short distance down Hwy 128. The trailhead is at the Grandstaff Canyon Trail and was previously known as Negro Bill Canyon, but that name was deemed to have the possibility to be offensive and was therefore changed.
Both names reference William Grandstaff, who was an African American prospector who settled in the area.
The trail to the arch is one of our favorites because it follows a nice creekbed where there is lots of vegetation which is not common on many of the other trails.
Once you arrive at the Morning Glory Arch, there is a natural spring where you can drink the water or fill up your water bottle. The water is naturally filtered through the rock.
35. Matrimony Springs
Matrimony Springs is another spring that is naturally filtered, and the water can be used for drinking. The springs is just past Lions Park on the right-hand side of the road. The name comes from a story that was told in the area that if women could get men to drink from the springs, they would be sweethearts forever.
It is now thought that if you drink from the springs, you will fall in love with Moab, and you will continually return to enjoy its marvelous wonders. The GPS coordinates to the springs are 38.60307905013409, -109.57229841126127.
Best Restaurants in Moab
36. Moab Food Truck Park
The Moab Food Truck Park is a great spot in town to try many different types of food. We love going here because we can all get something different or try multiple different types of food.
We love getting a meal or two from food trucks. There are great places to relax, and the Moab Food Truck Park is right in the middle of town. The GPS coordinates are 38.574740444885514, -109.5520067441802.
37. Gloria’s Café
Gloria’s Cafe is a great stop to eat in town. They have fantastic burgers and the best homemade kombucha you will find anywhere. They have many different types of Kombucha, and it is a great refreshment for those hot days and after a long day of exploring the great things Moab has to offer.
38. Thai Bella Moab
If you are a fan of Thai food, then Thai Bella Moab is right up your alley. It is just a few streets off Main Street, so you can walk or drive. There is a parking area nearby, or you can park on the road, but there is not a lot of parking right at the restaurant.
39. ZaX Restaurant
Moab is a great area for pizza. We are not a big pizza family, but Zax’s pizza is definitely worth it. It gives you the feeling that you are eating pizza right out of Italy. They have many different types of pizzas, with all of them being a great experience.
If you are looking for great pizza or other American-style food, you will have a great meal at Zax. They are right on Main Street with indoor seating and a rooftop seating area that is nice to look out at in the city of Moab.

I spoke with two front desks staff, both were knowledgeable and friendly. The room was clean, very basic…but enough for what I needed, a warm bed and shower (after hiking). It’s in a convenient location on the strip…to restaurants and gas stations and shops. – Maithong (Expedia Review)

The fitness center is nice, and they have outdoor BBQs for those wanting to do a little grilling on the BBQ.
