What Size RV is Allowed in Yellowstone?

Yellowstone National Park does not have a maximum RV length restriction, but their campgrounds do.

Some national parks have height and length restrictions in order to enter the national park. This is because of the road size or because there is an overhanging rock or something your RV must fit under.

In Yellowstone National Park, there are no height or length restrictions inside the park; however, large RV sites are limited and can be hard to find. A good rule of thumb is you should be 40 feet or less, but Yellowstone National Park does have space for your big rig that is larger than 40 feet.

Fishing Bridge RV Park can accommodate big rigs. The Yellowstone National Park Lodge website states, “Recreational vehicles with a combined length (RV and tow vehicle) of up to 95 feet in length can be accommodated based on the availability of the right-size site.”

This is for Fishing Bridge only. It has been newly renovated and is only for hard-sided RVs. This is because the location is close to bear habitats, and grizzly bears pass through the area.

Yellowstone National Park RV length restrictions do not apply if you are just driving through the park.

What is the Longest RV Allowed in Yellowstone National Park?

The longest RV that can be accommodated in Yellowstone National Park is 95 feet long. This is the total length, including any tow vehicles. The only location that can accommodate this length is Fishing Bridge RV Park.

If Fishing Bridge RV park is not available, there are multiple RV parks just outside of Yellowstone National Park that can accommodate larger campers with tow vehicles.

Commercial vehicles are not allowed to go through Yellowstone Park, but group tour buses are allowed.

Can You Drive Through Yellowstone in an RV?

YES!! You can drive through Yellowstone in an RV or RV campers. We do not recommend driving around to see the park in a large RV, but if you are going to do it, Yellowstone National Park is one of the best parks to explore with an RV.

The park is huge, and often has large group tour busses traveling through the park to see it. Because of this, they have decent parking for larger vehicles at many of the popular viewing spots.

Yellowstone National Park RV length restrictions for most campgrounds is about 40 feet.

What Size RV is Best For National Parks?

The best size RV for national parks can depend on a lot of factors and where you are going. There are some national parks that have roads that do not allow RVs at all, and being in an RV that is way too small for your group can also create undue stress and discomfort.

That being said, the best length for an RV in the national parks is around 25 feet. At this length, you are able to travel through almost all of the parks and locations. There might be 10% of the national parks that cannot accommodate this size.

This size also gives you more room for a larger group.

How Strict is Yellowstone on RV Size?

Yellowstone is not strict on the size of your RV if you are just passing through, but Yellowstone is very strict if you book a campsite that is smaller than your actual length. If you reserve a campsite that is too small, you will not fit in, and you will not have a place to stay.

Make sure you know what size your RV is. This includes your tow vehicle or anything else you are pulling.

The Yellowstone National Park RV length restrictions is the longest at the Fishing Bridge RV park.

There are not any Yellowstone National Park RV length restrictions if you are just driving through the park. Each campground does have size limits, and most sites can fit 30 to 40-foot-long trailers, but the Fishing Bridge can hold a 95-foot RV or motorhome.

This is the total length of your motorhome and tow vehicle or your truck, camper, double-towed boat, or any other combination.

Measuring the Length of Your RV

Measuring the length of the RV is easy for any RV owner. All you need is a measuring tape. It is preferable to have a measuring tape that is longer so you can get the most accurate number, but if you have a typical 25-foot measuring tape, that will work too.

Have someone hold the measuring tape at the front of the RV while another person walks to the back of the RV to extend the measuring tape until you get to the very end of your RV. If you are going to be towing something behind your RV, you will need to measure from the front of the RV to the end of the towed vehicle or trailer.

If your measuring tape is not long enough to measure the whole thing at one time, all you need to do is measure until you are at the maximum length of your measuring tape and mark that spot on the ground. You will then retract the measuring tape and start measuring again from where you left your mark.

After you have done this, you will add up the number, and this will give you the total length of your RV.

Camping Fees in Yellowstone National Park

Tips for Taking an RV Through Yellowstone

1. When taking an RV through Yellowstone or any other national park, it is best to arrive before dark. The more we travel in an RV, the harder we try not to arrive at unknown locations or any location after dark. Trying to navigate campgrounds and RV parks in the dark or right before it gets dark can be very challenging. It makes it very hard to see other cars parked on the road or trees that might be overhanging the road.

Many RV parks have limited space. This space is very hard to navigate in the dark. If your motorhome is smaller, this is not as big of a deal, but it will make your life so much less stressful if you arrive and get set up before dark.

2. Don’t be in a rush. Driving an RV is not the same as driving the car you drive every day. RVs are much larger and harder to navigate. Giving yourself extra time to get places will greatly increase the enjoyment of your travels.

3. When traveling through Yellowstone and in the wilderness, it is very important you do not leave food outside. Clean-up is sometimes overlooked when in an RV.

Don’t leave any food outside. This includes dog food. It is also important to not leave anything that smells strongly outside. This can attract bears. You do not want to attract bears to your campsite. This is how animals become habituated to humans and can eventually cause them to be relocated or euthanized.

Bison

4. Make sure to reserve your campsite or RV spot in advance and reserve the correct size campsite. Yellowstone National Park, like other national parks, can fill its camp spots months in advance.

If you try to book a spot that is smaller than your actual size, they will turn you away. They do not give you extra space or wiggle room for booking a location that is smaller than your actual size.

5. Be ready for buffalo jams. This is a real thing. Buffalo can block the road for hours. We always bring more than enough snacks to make sure the kids or adults don’t get hungry when driving back to the campsite after a long day.

Conclusion: Yellowstone National Park RV Length Restrictions

Yellowstone National Park is one of the best national parks we have been to. It is also one of the most popular national parks. If you are wanting to camp in the park, you will need to make your reservation well in advance.

One of the many great things about it is that it is one of the best national parks to take your RV into. There are very minimal RV restrictions. Part of this is due to the fact that Yellowstone National Park is one of the largest in square miles making for a great RV trip. Wherever your adventures take you, we hope they take you through Yellowstone National Park.
