You’ve landed on the right article! We’ve been traveling together since 2010 and have visited over 30 national parks and monuments. During our last visit to San Diego we took a day to visit Cabrillo National Monument for the first time.
Highlights for us were the tide pool area, spotting gray whales, exploring the lighthouse, and the amazing views from Point Loma. There was a great short walk to some old military sites that our kids really enjoyed too.

Where is Cabrillo National Monument?
Cabrillo National Monument is located in San Diego, California. It sits on the Point Loma peninsula, overlooking the vast Pacific Ocean.
Cabrillo National Monument Tickets and Admission
You’ll need to secure tickets for admission to Cabrillo Monument. Here is a quick preview of the entrance fees:
- Private Vehicle (Non-Commercial): $20 per vehicle
- Motorcycle: $15 per motorcycle
- Per Person (Walk-in, Bicycle): $10 per person (16 years and older)
- Children (15 years and under): Free
Cabrillo also offers some free entrance days, here is a list of their 2023 fee-free days:

Keep in mind that the Cabrillo National Monument fee contributes to the preservation and maintenance of this historical site, so it’s a great way of supporting this beautiful place.
The entrance fee is $20 per vehicle. However, if you have an annual National Park Pass ($80), your entry will be included as this site is managed by the National Park Service. They will also accept Golden Age, Golden Access, and National Parks Pass passports.

Cabrillo National Monument is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Cabrillo National Monument Parking
Cabrillo has three parking areas at the tidepools. The parking lots will usually be full on weekends, holidays, and during low tides. If you want to get a spot to park in, we recommend that you arrive at least an hour before low tide is expected.
Things to Do in Cabrillo National Monument
Cabrillo National Monument Visitor Center
Nestled in the heart of the monument, the Cabrillo National Monument Visitor Center has an inviting atmosphere with beautiful vistas. It provides valuable information, insightful exhibits, and Cabrillo National Monument photos and maps that capture the essence of the monument’s significance. This is also a great place to check out the day’s weather forecast and find out when low tide is.
From 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., a park ranger and friendly volunteers are there to answer questions and give suggestions on what to do. We always like to take advantage of these services as they are the insiders hooking you up with the scoop. They will be able to help you find the day’s schedule of auditorium programs and ranger talks.
Little ones will love chatting with a ranger and getting their National Parks Passport books stamped. They also provide a Junior Ranger activity for kids, so make sure you pick one up here. My kids absolutely love collecting the junior ranger badges on our trips. It makes such a great keepsake from our trip, and they learn lots of amazing things about the places we visit.
Don’t forget to explore the Foundation Bookstore, where you can grab some souvenirs or keepsakes.
Cabrillo National Monument Tide Pools
One of our favorite things to do in Cabrillo National Monument is to visit the Point Loma tide pools. The tidepool area is a popular spot for visitors, with over 350,000 people visiting each year. You will want to make sure you consult the tide chart to plan your tide pool adventure.
We recommend visiting during low tide so you can truly see the captivating world of marine life and vibrant ecosystems that this place has.
The tide pools are one of the best-protected rocky intertidal areas in California. The intertidal zone, the area between the high and low tide marks where the ocean meets the land, will truly come to life during low tide at Cabrillo National Monument. The tide pools are home to a variety of animals. Some of the things we got to see when we visited were mussels, anemones, snails, crabs, small fishes, lobsters, and even octopuses.
We love being respectful of the places that we visit. We feel it’s important to educate others on how to best care for these beautiful areas. When exploring the tide pools, we recommend following these simple rules:
- Look but do not touch.
- Walk gently and try to avoid walking on plants and animals.
- Don’t remove plants, animals, or shells from the tide pools.
The tide pools are open every day from 9 AM–4:30 PM.
Cabrillo National Monument Tide Chart
Understanding tidal patterns is a very important step if you want to have a rewarding visit to the tide pools. The timing of low tide changes each day, so we recommend checking the tide chart before you visit. We used NOAA’s Tide Predictions before arriving, but you can also find tide tables at the Visitors Center.
Point Loma Whale Watching
Standing atop Point Loma’s vantage point, you’ll be offered a front-row seat to the remarkable world of Cabrillo National Monument whale watching. The coastal waters surrounding the monument make for an optimal location for observing these majestic creatures. Point Cabrillo, known for its spectacular views, becomes the stage for this captivating spectacle.
If your visit falls anywhere between mid-December and March, you’re in for a treat with the opportunity for whale watching. The migration peaks in mid-January, so don’t forget to pack your binoculars. To catch this extraordinary show, make your way to the Kelp Forest Overlook, Whale Overlook, and the Old Point Loma Lighthouse – the perfect vantage points.
These creatures undertake a voyage spanning almost 12,000 miles. Leaving their Arctic feeding grounds, they journey south to the warm waters of Baja California’s bays. Their path takes them past Point Loma and the monument’s western overlooks, offering a truly captivating display.

Cabrillo National Monument Hikes
Cabrillo National Monument Trails have some great hiking opportunities that showcase the natural beauty of the area. If you’re looking for a leisurely stroll along the shoreline, you’ll want to try the Bayside Trail. The Point Loma Tidepools and Coastal Trail are a bit more of a journey as they invite you to explore the ecosystems.
Bayside Trail
The Bayside Trail is a picturesque hiking route that winds along the western edge of Point Loma. It provides breathtaking panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, the downtown San Diego skyline, and the iconic Coronado Bridge. We loved feeling the fresh ocean breezes and the sound of crashing waves as we took our stroll along this path.
The trail itself is relatively easy, so we know hikers of all levels and ages will love it. The path is well-maintained and is both paved and dirt. We loved stopping along the way to read the signs that talk about the local plants, animals, and history of the area.
When you’re on the Bayside Trail, keep your eyes peeled for coastal birds, marine creatures, and maybe even a passing ship or two. One of the highlights of this trail is the Old Point Loma Lighthouse.
This trail is great whether you’re in the mood for a leisurely stroll with beautiful views or a good spot to catch the sunset. Just make sure you wear comfortable shoes, stay hydrated, and put on some sunscreen. You’ll also want to take some pictures along the way, so don’t forget your camera!
Point Loma Tidepools and Coastal Trail
We found that the Point Loma Tidepools and Coastal Trail are more of a captivating exploration route. This trail was more of an invitation to explore the rugged Pacific Coast. This trail is a perfect blend of natural beauty, marine life, and breathtaking ocean views. Make sure you look for low tide, as it’s the best time to explore.
We recommend bringing along a pair of sturdy shoes suitable for rocky terrain, a hat for sun protection, sunscreen, and drinking water. You’ll also want to bring a camera or a phone, preferably with a waterproof sleeve, so you can capture all the little details & creatures you’ll find along the way.

Guided Walking Tours and Ranger Programs
Guided Walking Tours
Cabrillo National Monument also offers free guided walking tours that you won’t want to miss. These guided tours will give you a deeper understanding of the area, and you’ll learn some things you may have never known otherwise.
Every Saturday, you can tag along with a friendly park volunteer on a one-hour tour that covers all the must-see spots. You will get to see the famous Cabrillo Statue and the historic Old Point Loma Lighthouse. These are very fun and informative, and everyone will have a great time, no matter their age.
You also don’t have to worry about booking ahead. You can just show up at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m., right in front of the Visitor Center. Keep in mind that there’s a little hill to conquer on the way to the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, so wear some comfortable shoes.
Snake Meet ‘N Greet
If you’re intrigued by the local wildlife and aren’t easily scared, the “Snake Meet ‘N Greet” program is an exciting opportunity to learn about these local reptiles. Cabrillo’s got three snake ambassadors who are ready to share their knowledge about these creatures.
Not only do you get to observe these incredible reptiles up close, but you also get to interact with them in a controlled and safe environment. You’ll be able to gain valuable insights into the behavior, habitat, and conservation of local snake species. This activity is available every Thursday at 1 p.m. over the breezeway by the Visitor Center.
Military Bunker
If you want to step back in time at Cabrillo, you won’t want to miss exploring the military bunkers. These relics from World War I and II are some amazing pieces of history you’ll love. These bunkers were strategically built between 1918 and 1943 and housed weaponry like machine guns and artillery to defend the San Diego Bay.
You can freely visit the restored Base End Station and Battery Commander’s bunker. However, your only opportunity to tour them will be on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Cabrillo National Monument is open 365 days a year, including holidays, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We love that this makes it a really convenient way to plan ahead and make the most of your time at this remarkable San Diego monument.
Pets in the National Monument
While Cabrillo National Monument welcomes visitors, it’s important to note that pets, with the exception of service animals, are not allowed in any area of the park except for the Coastal Trail accessed from the tidepool parking area.
Dining and Other Amenities
While the park itself doesn’t host any restaurants, you’ll find a variety of dining choices in the nearby communities. You can also find grocery stores in the local surrounding area.
You won’t find any official picnic areas in the park, but you can still find plenty of scenic spots to enjoy your meal with views. Make sure that you follow their “Pack It In, Pack It Out” policy, and take your trash with you.
Although the park doesn’t offer camping facilities or accommodations within the park grounds, you will find many options available nearby.
Cabrillo National Monument History
When Was the Cabrillo National Monument Built?
Cabrillo National Monument holds a rich history that spans centuries. The monument was established in 1913. It was built to honor the explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, marking his landing on the California coast in 1542.
The Old Point Loma Lighthouse, a notable landmark within the monument, was built earlier. Construction of the lighthouse started in 1854 and became operational in 1855.
This historic site also played a crucial role as a coastal defense during World War I and World War II. Some evident signs of this are the military bunkers that were constructed between 1918 and 1943. The Cabrillo National Monument Visitor Center was constructed between 1963 and 1967 and has been welcoming visitors since.

Such a sweet and simple yet thoughtful little hotel! Seems to be one of the only ‘newer’ hotels in the area that appreciate design and ambiance. The chain hotels nearby could never compare. Loved the mid century vibe and how clean the design is. Makes it so peaceful and relaxing.

I stay in San Diego quite a bit, and never knew about this hotel. but I am so glad I found it. My wife and I have dogs now and it is really hard to find something affordable in gaslamp, and this place was amazing.

The length of your walk depends on the trail you choose.
The Bayside Trail is a 2.3-mile out-and-back trail. It took us about 1 hour to complete. The trail has a pretty easy route. This trail is very popular for birding, hiking, and running.
The Point Loma Tidepools and Coastal Trail is a 1.2-mile out-and-back trail. It took us about 25 minutes to complete and was a very easy route. Of course, if you go with little ones and opt to explore, it’ll make it a bit longer. This was a very popular trail, so you’ll likely run into other people while going through it.
What is the Significance of the Cabrillo National Monument?
The monument commemorates the landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, the first European to set foot on the West Coast of the United States in 1542. It celebrates his exploration and the cultural exchange that followed.
