One of our favorite things on our trip to Canyonlands was the vast beauty and size! With 337,598 acres of land and water, you can go back multiple times, and still have new places to see. 

Just a note that there aren’t many places to stay INSIDE each district – unless you want to camp. We will tell you all the most convenient places to stay as close to the districts as possible.

5. GRIST MILL INN (BUDGET)

Located 53 minutes from the Island in The Sky district, the Grist Mill Inn is a highly rated place to stay near Canyonlands National Park if you are wanting to explore the Needles District. If you are wanting to explore Island in the Sky, the most popular part of the park to explore, this is not the best place to stay.

With rooms starting around $74/night, you can’t beat it! This hotel is located only about 1 hour from the Needles District, in Monticello, UT – one of the closest hotels to the Needles District.

It’s located 37 minutes from the Island in The Sky of Canyonlands and 1 hour and 18 minutes from the Needles District, and right in the heart of Moab. An on-site convenience store, fitness center, and laundry facility make this a no-brainer. One negative – there are no infant cribs or rollaway beds available – so plan accordingly!

If you love nature walks and seeing wildlife, this may be the place for you. Located only 32 minutes from Canyonlands, this is some of the best lodging near Canyonlands National Park in Utah.

Free breakfast and a playground make it perfect for the kids.

This budget motel is only 1 hour and 20 minutes from the entrance to The Maze District – located in Hanksville in Southeastern Utah. Situated in a perfect town, just west of Canyonlands National Park, Whispering Sands Motel is a quaint and beautiful place. 

A plus is that up to two children stay free here, 17 years old and younger, when with an accompanying parent and using existing bedding in the guest rooms. No cribs are available at this motel, so prepare ahead of time.

With a river running through town, you can spend time kayaking or hiking and biking on local trails. Location and helpful staff are the top things guests speak of. Enjoy the three local restaurants in this beautiful Utah town.

What is the closest town to Canyonlands National Park?

There are a good amount of towns near Canyonlands National Park. Moab is the closest larger city. There are lots of things to do in Moab, and it has easy access to all areas of the park, so it’s generally where most people stay.

There are also a couple of small towns along the edges of the park, including Monticello, La Sal, Spanish Valley, Hanksville, and Green River.

What’s the area like around Canyonlands National Park?

It’s about geology! You’ll see canyons carved into rock layers by rivers that have been flowing for millions of years. The Needles has beautiful rock spires, while The Maze has deep canyon trenches in red rock landscapes that go for miles.

The rock that exists easily erodes, even in heavy summer rainfall. The beauty of the park is unreal. Layers and layers of softer rock on harder rock give an amazing appearance to the canyons and spires – giving it a layered, cake-like appearance.

Where should I stay between Moab and Canyonlands? 

Depending on the district you are going to will be a significant factor in where you will want to stay. If you are going to the Island in The Sky District, which is the most popular, there are many options for staying between Moab and Canyonlands. The hotels in downtown Moab will be the best options.

If you are visiting the Needles district, you will want to check out Montecito, Utah. It is a cute little town near the park, and the Grist Mill Inn is a great option. If you are visiting the Maze district, you will want to stay in Hanksville.

Things to Do in Canyonlands National Park 

Driving Shafer Canyon Road

Shafer Road is an off-road trail located in the Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands. It descends through a massive, sandstone cliff, and should not be missed! It’s for 4WD vehicles, only.

The White Rim Road is another off-road trail in Moab not to miss. Also located in the Island in the Sky District – this 100-mile loop provides expansive views of the surrounding area. You can either drive a 4WD vehicle or a mountain bike. Be aware that a full trip on this road takes 2-3 days driving and 3-4 days via bike.

Jeep Tours

You definitely don’t want to miss going on a Jeep tour of Canyonlands. A Jeep tour provides the opportunity to see the park in all its splendor while being as safe as possible. If you’re brave, you can try to do it on your own, but we suggest a guided tour.

Hiking to Mesa Arch

One of the most photographed arches in Southeast Utah, this arch should not be missed. Only about a 30-minute hike, starting at the Islands in the Sky District. Simply drive 6.3 miles south of the Island in the Sky Visitor Center and turn left (east) into the Mesa Arch Parking Area.

Dead Horse Point State Park

Yes, we know this isn’t in Canyonlands, but this state park should make it on your list of must-dos when visiting the area. Located just southwest of the Moab area, and right at the top of Canyonlands, this beautiful park is situated perfectly. It’s filled with trails, a landscape of canyons, and high desert woodlands.
