PLANNING A VISIT TO SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK IN DECEMBER?

We can help! We’ve been traveling together since 2010 and have visited over 30 national parks. One of our favorite national parks in the Golden State is Sequoia National Park.

Fun fact: Sequoia was the second established national park after Yellowstone. This park is home to the largest trees in the world by volume. This includes General Sherman, the largest tree in the park!

Visiting Sequoia National Park in December provides a unique opportunity to see these amazing trees blanketed in snow.

On top of that, the park has some of the best hikes and views you’ll ever see. Trust us, if you haven’t visited yet, you will love it here! So let’s dive into this beautiful winter wonderland and all there is to see and do in December.

Visiting Sequoia National Park in December

Trees and mountains in Sequoia National Park in December.

If you’re thinking about visiting Sequoia National Park in December, we’ve got you covered with some advice to make your trip awesome. When winter comes, sequoia groves are snowy and cold but peaceful.

There’s lots to see, but we really like the hikes in the foothills. And the park rangers at the park also offer free outdoor winter activities.

Keep in mind that snowfall varies, and it can be hard to predict. The temperature in Sequoia National Park in late December usually averages 29°F. Because of this, we recommend coming prepared for icy road conditions.

How to Get to Sequoia National Park

Getting to Sequoia is actually pretty simple. You can either roll in through the Ash Mountain Entrance down south via Highway 198. Or, enter through the Big Stump Entrance up north via Highway 180. If you are flying in, Fresno-Yosemite International Airport is the nearest option. This will put you at about an hour and a half away from the park.

Winter Hours and Potential Closures

A creek running next to a road in Sequoia National Park in December.

December in Sequoia is a bit of a quieter time. The parks are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Occasionally, winter storms will close some park roads until they can be plowed.

The Foothills and Kings Canyon Visitor Centers are open daily from 9:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., save for any instances of weather closures. These are wonderful places to visit to learn about the history and ecology of this area.

If you’re traveling with kids, consider stopping by the Giant Forest Museum too. It’s a fun place to really learn about why this environment produces such gigantic trees!

Keep in mind that the Lodgepole Visitor Center, Cedar Grove Visitor Center, and Mineral King Ranger Station are all closed throughout the winter. This locations typically do not reopen until May.

Fees/Reservations

If you don’t already have one, consider grabbing an America The Beautiful Pass. It’s your golden ticket to Sequoia and all the other national parks for a full year. It’s a budget-friendly way to roll into the park. We’ve also had this pass for years and love all of the places we can visit using it.

Otherwise, the standard entrance fees for traveling to most of California’s national parks, including Sequoia National Park in December are as follows: $35 per private vehicle, $30 per motorcycle, $20 per person (for those exploring the park on foot or by bicycle in warmer months). A pass is valid for seven days.

Things to do in Sequoia National Park in December

1. Winter Hiking

Heavy snow and tall trees.

Inevitably some trails will be closed during the winter, so these are a no-go. However, some others are still open for business. We recommend you try out lower-elevation trails like the Congress Trail and Big Trees Trail.

For us, the best Sequoia National Park hike in December is the Congress Trail. This trail has lots of fun things to see along the way as well as an amazing grove of ancient Sequoia trees.

One of the most popular hikes in the park is Morro Rock. From the top of Morro Rock, there are beautiful views of the Great Western Divide. We did this hike with our twins, who were three at the time, and they did great.

The trail is narrow, with some stone steps. There is a guardrail, but there are some drop-offs, so it is a good idea to exercise caution.

A few others we enjoy are:

  • The Big Trees Loop Trail:  A 0.75-mile loop that’s covered in snow.
  • Marble Falls Trail: Best in late winter and early spring. This trail has full rivers, roaring falls, and blooming wildflowers.

If, instead, you’re looking for December backpacking trips in Sequoia National Park, we recommend Alta Trail and Hazlewood Trail. These are quieter trails that are good for winter hiking if you have snowshoes.

We wouldn’t recommend hiking the Glacier Ridge Sequoia National Park in December. This is a more challenging climb that is best done from mid-June to mid-October.

2. Giant Sequoia Viewing

Looking up from the ground at huge trees in Sequoia National Park in December.

The giant sequoias are always the star of the show. The General Sherman Tree, Moro Rock, and Grant Grove are the main attractions that you will want to pay a visit to.

The top attraction in the park is General Sherman, along with the other large trees in the Giant Forest. The General Sherman tree is estimated to be 2,100 years old. There are great walking paths through this area where you can admire these beautiful trees.

3. Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing

If you haven’t tried it yet, now is the time! Strap on some snowshoes or cross-country skis and get exploring. Sequoia Park has some cool designated trails for it.

If your family is new to snowshoeing we recommend Congress Trail, it’s an easy route. Watchtower Trail is more moderate, followed by Alta Peak via Lakes, Panther Gap, and Alta Trail which are all difficult snowshoeing trails. Pear Lake Winter Hut is the most advanced snowshoeing trail.

As for cross-country skiing, Middle Fork Trail, Hume Lake Ranger District, Big Meadow Winter Trail, Cherry Gap Winter Trail, and Quail Flat Winter Trail are all great areas to explore.

4. Scenic Drives

You can always take a leisurely drive through the park and soak in the snowy views. Just be cautious on those slippery roads. You will want to come prepared to drive in the snow with snow tires and some chains or cables.

5. Photography

The winter scenery is Instagram-worthy, to say the least. Make sure you capture the giant sequoias and the beautiful landscapes with your camera.

6. Wildlife Watching

Winter is prime time for spotting critters like mule deer and black bears, so keep your eyes peeled.

7. Ranger Program: Winter Snowshoe Walks

Pine trees and shrubs in a California National Park.

The park offers some popular ranger-guided snowshoe walks. These are a great way to explore snowy trails. Snowshoe programs are usually offered from December to March. As long as there is at least 8 inches of snow on the ground, the tours will happen.

The park adds walks to its online program calendar as soon as the snow is deep enough. You can also find their snowshoe walk schedules on bulletin boards in the Visitor Centers. Make sure you get there early to make reservations to hold your spot.

Ranger-Led Walks:
