Staying Inside the National Park vs Staying Outside the Park
When looking for places to stay near the South Rim Grand Canyon, you will need to decide if you want to stay inside the park or outside of the park. Lodging in the park is more expensive on average, but you are within walking distance of the canyon rim. Some of the hotels in the park even have canyon views.
The other nice thing is you don’t have to worry about parking when you explore the park. Most of the hotels are on the bus route, so you can easily move about the park without driving.

Can You Spend the Night at the Bottom of the Grand Canyon?
Yes! You can spend the night at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, but you’ll need to plan up to a year in advance (and add a pinch of luck). There is only one hotel/campground at the base of the canyon: Phantom Ranch.
Phantom Ranch is nestled inside a gorgeous oasis beside Bright Angel Creek. Giant trees rustle above a series of rustic cabins.
The cabins and dormitories at Phantom Ranch can only be reached on foot, by mule, or by rafting down the Colorado River. Space is so limited that the park uses a lottery system for reservations.

Going on a tour of the Grand Canyon is a great way to experience this national park, especially if you aren’t comfortable hiking by yourself. Professional guides are always so helpful in learning more about the area and really add a lot to your experience. Here are some of the best Grand Canyon tours.
FAQ: Places to Stay near the South Rim Grand Canyon
What city is closest to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon?
Tusayan is the closest city to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. It is only two miles from the South Rim Entrance and is a perfect place to stay, fuel up your car, buy groceries, etc.
Tusayan is home to many hotels, restaurants, gas stations, convenience stores, and the famous Grand Canyon IMAX theater. Tusayan also has an airport and helicopter landing pads.
Other nearby towns include Valle (also known as Grand Canyon Junction) and Williams. Valle is 30 miles from Grand Canyon Village, while Williams is 63 miles away.
Is it worth staying in Grand Canyon Village?
If you have the budget for it, it could be worth staying in Grand Canyon Village. It’s amazing to have the park at your fingertips, so to speak – amazing views and convenience.
However, Tusayan is only a short drive away and offers a variety of places to stay near the Grand Canyon South Rim. Sometimes the accommodations can be more affordable or offer more amenities for the money. They are still close enough that you could head to your hotel for a midday break, then return to the park for sunset or to stargaze.
Is it better to stay in the North Rim or South Rim of the Grand Canyon?
You will have different experiences depending on if you stay at the North Rim or the Grand Canyon’s South Rim. The North Rim is more remote, with not as many amenities or lodging options. However, the North Rim has much better weather in the summer.
There are a lot more trees on the north rim, so temperatures are very pleasant. The crowds are also much smaller on the north side.
The South Rim has more tours, restaurants, and lodging options available. You will find larger crowds here during the summer months. We visited the south rim of the Grand Canyon in late September and had no issues with crowds.
How many days do you need to see the Grand Canyon?
How many days you spend at the Grand Canyon depends on how many activities you want to do while you are there. If you are going on a mule ride or hiking down into the canyon, you will need additional time in the national park.
